Chasing the Pittas of Vietnam

A country located along the Southeast Asia Peninsula - VIETNAM. My second visit to this developing nation not for holiday, but for its nature and wildlife, ie. chasing birds. Thanks to its geographical location and tropical terrain, much endemic birds can be found residing there, calling the country it's home.

1. BAR - BELLIED PITTA   =>   The most attractive and highly sought pitta of Vietnam. The female has a yellowish outlook while the male has a more greenish look with a green crown. This pitta is one of the most sought bird in Vietnam, and one of the most beautiful pitta ever seen.

2. BLUE - RUMPED PITTA   =>   An earth-toned look where both the male and female look very similar. The female is much duller and has a lighter blue crown while the male has a very distinct blue crown and greener back.

3. RUSTY - NAPED PITTA   =>   Another earth-toned bird but with a dirty-brown belly. It has an orange crown with a black stripe across the eye, making it more distinctive to identify. Shots were taken on a dark and rainy day, therefore I could not tell if this is a male or female. Only one pitta of this species was seen.

4. BLUE PITTA   =>   A colourful blue bird with a yellowish forehead and a black stripe across the eye. The male has a vibrant blue back whereas the female has a bluish grey back. They typically lives in a moist forest.

I booked my Pitta Photography trip from http://vietbirdphototours.com. This is my second time with them for the photo tour. They are very knowledgable with the bird species, and provided very good service, which made me returned to them. Hope to visit Vietnam again for more birds and I would definitely make my booking with them for my next trip.

Thank you for reading and that's all folks!! :))

Singapore Diversity: SPIDERS - A Spiny Collection

The Spiny orb-weavers are one of the most unique spiders where they can show off a variety of colours, shapes and patterns. They also come in different sizes especially in their adult form. Their webs can go as big stretching tree to tree, spanning a distance of one to two metres.  1. Gasteracantha doriae (Doria's Spiny Spider) - My first encounter of this spider was at Mandai Track 7 high up above my head, and the second encounter was at Old Upper Thomson Road PCN.   2.    Gasteracantha kuhli (Black-and-white Spiny Spider) - This spider was seen many times at a neighbourhood park in Yishun and also along Yishun Ave 1. I believed it can be seen in parks with dense vegetation. It is a small spider with a big web. 3. Gasteracantha mengei (Spiny Orbweaver) - Both encounters were seen along Mandai Track 7. They are huge and their webs are high up in the tree. 4. Macracantha arcuata (Curved Spiny Spider or Longhorn Orbweaver) - This species was previously in the genu...

Thailand Birding - PHANG-NGA

We are into Day 7 of our 8 days trip and today, we would be heading to Phang-Nga. We checked out of Krung Ching Homestay & Resort at 6am, and because our next destination was an additional add-on to the itinerary, we had to eat 7-11 breakfast on-the-go. After a long 2hrs journey, we had arrived at a place which I could not find it on Google map. The whole place was surrounded by plantations and our shooting area was in the plantation itself. We had a hike upwards into the plantation grounds, and settled down at a Hide at the top overlooking a view of rubber trees, and with lots of commando mosquitoes buzzing around. Mosquito coils were set up for us, and that saved us alot 😁  We set-up our gears and waited for the changing of shift of the white-morph Blyth's Paradise Flycatcher nesting, incubation period. According to the locals, the shift was changed at every 20~30 mins interval. When we arrived at around 8:30am, the birds had just swapped shift, therefore the next change wou...

Vietnam Birding - Dinh Quan

Caught the first flight out of Singapore to Ho Chi Minh and upon arrival, our Guide was there waiting for us. Driving out of the airport was a challenge as traffic was pretty heavy and we stopped by to take-away some local coffee and tea before continuing our journey out of HCM city. Finally after two over hours of driving, we finally made our first stop - at a local restaurant, and it was time for lunch!! It was a local style restaurant with a variety of dishes for us to choose from, and most importantly, it was good. We had a full lunch and quickly set off to our first shooting site. We unloaded our stuffs and setup our gears along the road, then "chiong" (hurried) to our first Hide to watch our first Vietnamese Bird show. It  was quite a fruitful achievement on this very first day of our trip. Our Guide was able to gather the main actors of the show, and we were all happy and satisfied. We spent about three hours there as our Guide told us that we need to check-into our ho...
